Ro Goodwin as Symbiot

"Who Dares... Good-Wins"

Never one for being a conformist.. writer/director/producer/cameraman/editor & actor Robert Goodwin has found the best way to get ahead is to be one!! He's pictured above playing the head of a half man half machine known as Symbiot on the set during rehearsals for Catalina: A New Kind of Superhero, A WOTR production, in
Leeds in 2005.

Goodwin the Filmmaker...

From the initial spark of an idea to the writing of a script, through development, storyboarding, producing (finding locations, cast, crew, etc), to the filming and editing Robert Goodwin is totally focussed and ‘on fire’ with the process. Hence the name of his company Films on Fire. “I get a real buzz when I’m at any stage of the filmmaking process.” This shows in his finished work, which seems a cut above the rest.

…The Director

Drawing on his ability to get into character himself, Robert helps his cast to ‘get there’ simply by allowing them to feel comfortable. “I don’t have a magic wand but I do have a knack of putting people at ease in front of the camera.” This can range from youngsters in a documentary to adult performers in a gripping drama.

…The Producer

Robert is a hands-on person and he prefers to do all the pre-production himself and leaves no stone unturned whilst preparing for a film shoot.

...The Writer

He’s written several short drama and comedy scripts as well as 3 full-length features. The third one, which is a supernatural thriller he aims to make first.

...The Editor

Using Adobe Premier Pro, his preferred editing tool, he finds time generally at the end of the day to create the final version of his films with ease and certainty.

…The Teacher

“I have learned filmmaking in the school of hard knocks and feel that because of that I am able to convey to classes what works and what doesn’t. Once they have the confidence and ability they can then prove me wrong.”  He’s facilitated filmmaking at Tain Royal Academy, Golspie Youth Club, Brora Learning Centre and Invergordon Youth Club.

…The Actor

“Playing the role of Symbiot was an awesome experience. I was pinned under a prosthetic body, which had originally been made for an artificial head to go on. They cut a hole through the back for my head to go through. It was a painful experience as some plastic was sticking into the back of my head but this allowed me to get right into the character of being crazed and frustrated!” Other acting experiences have been garnered through setting up the Invergordon Players where he performs in the Arts Centre in Invergordon 2 or 3 times per year.

…The Businessman

Even though Robert first picked up a cine camera when he was 9-years-old he has always been close to business (his parents were both self employed in Dairying and Health foods) and this has helped him become a self-starter. He gained qualifications at Inverness Technical College during an SNC Business Studies course. Even though he became an infamous marketer and salesperson around Easter Ross and Inverness in the 90’s he has never been far from his creative side.

He set up Films on Fire as a limited company in early 2005 and has made steady progress towards his goal of making his first full-length feature film. “Making short films really teaches you the fundamentals, the essentials that I will use when on the set of a multi-million pound budget project.”

Although his heart is set on the big time he always has time for community films and local business promotional films. That is his bread and butter.

…Always Interested

Robert’s always interested in hearing from writers with story ideas, from businesspeople who would like to discuss promoting their business through the medium of film, and from investors who would like to get into the movie business..

"I have a full professional kit and a small crew thus keeping client's total investment to an absolute minimum."
